AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 12 LSU softball team took the lead twice in Friday’s Southeastern Conference opener against No. 2 Auburn, but the team would not be able to hold on to either in dropping the contest 5-4 Friday evening at Jane B. Moore Field.

After opening the game out of the gate with a two-run blast from Sahvanna Jaquish, LSU (18-5, 0-1 Southeastern) looked to take the crowd out of it, but every time the squad would go up Auburn (21-2, 1-0) would find a rally point and come back each time before eventually taking its final lead late in the contest and holding off LSU for good.

Each team finished the game with five hits, with Jaquish driving in two runs on her only hit of the game and got another in the form of a solo shot from Sydney Springfield who hit her fifth home run of the season in the process which tied the game at 3-3 after Auburn had taken its first lead of the game.

Sydney Smith earned the start and held her own early before the Auburn bats started to come on as she allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks in four innings. Reliever Carley Hoover (3-2) would suffer the loss as an unearned run crossed the plate in the fifth as she pitched the final two innings and struck out four and walking two.

Auburn’s Kaylee Carlson (12-0) earned the win as she allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Victoria Draper had two of Auburn’s five hits and a run scored, while Kendall Veach drove in two on a double.

The Game Turned When…

Auburn trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, a walk and double down the line in left tied the game at four, as Hoover came on to replace Smith. LSU would get the next two batters out, but with a runner still on and at third thanks to a fielder’s choice the play before, an error allowed the runner to score giving the home side the lead for the second time.

On the team’s performance against Auburn Friday…

“It’s a typical SEC game with multiple lead changes. It’s a battle, a non-stop battle and you have to have an answer any time somebody does something. Auburn did that well and I think we did that well too.”

On what the team will need to do better going into game two…

“One of the things we track in the dugout is the freebie war. We lost that tonight. We gave up too many free passes; walks, errors, passed balls, stolen bases. Things like that. So we lost that battle and gave them too many things and we need to make them earn everything they get.”

Game two of the series is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field. The game will be televised live on the SEC Network with Tom Hart and Amanda Scaroborough, with radio coverage on Talk 107.3 FM.
