Four Divers Earn NCAA Qualifying Spots At Zones

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Four divers qualified for the NCAA Championships in their respective events on the second day of the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Regionals at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
The diving team will return to action tomorrow for the final day of Zones. Men’s platform prelims will start at 11 a.m. CT, and the women’s platform prelims will follow later in the afternoon at 4:45 p.m. CT.
“We had another great day on the boards. So far, we have four Tigers qualified in eight events at the NCAA Championships. We are now focused on our final day with the men’s and women’s platform events with more opportunities ahead of us.”
For the men, Juan Celaya-Hernandez captured his second straight spot at NCAA’s on three-meter with a two-list score of 895.50. Andrew Suchla also notched his second bid of the week, taking sixth overall with a final score of 740.65.
Matt McClellan earned his first-ever NCAA berth, coming in right behind Suchla with a two-list score of 740.40. McClellan becomes the third total diver to qualify for NCAA’s for the men’s team, marking the first time since 2001 the team will send at least three divers to compete at NCAA’s.
Matthew Phillip rounded out the men, taking 12th place in the finals with a score of 696.15.
On the women’s side, Lizzie Cui qualified for her second event on one-meter, diving to a two-list score of 614.20 for fourth overall in the finals. This marks the second straight year Cui has qualified for the NCAA Championships on both one and three-meter.
The diving team will return to action tomorrow for the final day of Zones. Men’s platform prelims will start at 11 a.m. CT. The women’s platform prelims will follow later in the afternoon at 4:45 p.m. CT.
