Nistrup, Cavin Open Even Par For LSU Golfers

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – LSU senior Caroline Nistrup and junior Sydney Cavin posted even par rounds of 72 to open the spring season Sunday the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

Nistrup and Cavin both had four birdies in the round to get to 72 and they are tied in a big group at T8, but just two shots off the first round lead over the 6,100-plus yard River Course at the Rio Grande that the tournament, hosted by Purdue, is played.

The Lady Tigers are T8 after the first round at 11-over par 299. The leader is Furman at 2-over 290. It’s two more shots back to Texas Tech at 292 and Kent State is third at 293 with TCU and Georgia tied for fourth at 294.

Nistrup bogeyed her first hole in the shotgun (15), but got back to even with a birdie on the 18th hole. She had her round as low as 1-under after eight holes, before finishing at 72. Cavin, who started on 16, was +3 after four holes but was able to birdie the second, third and fifth holes to get back to even. After another front-nine bogey, she birdied the final hole of the round (at 15) to get her 72 posted.

The Lady Tigers also counted a five-over 77 from sophomore Kathleen Gallagher and a six-over 78 from sophomore Marina Hedlund, who was teeing it up for her first round of the 2016-17 season.
