Coach Brown on the Close Match
"For being so early in the year, our team really played together in a sense of how hard they fought to play as a team," head coach Jeff Brown said. "The matches that we played were won with a lot of heart.
"This young team really grew up today, and we were excited to see the growth out there. We still have a lot of learning to do from this match, but we are glad that we get to growth with a win against a ranked opponent."
USF took the doubles point to get off to an early 1-0 lead. Peter Bertran and Justin Robers defeated Gabor Csonka and Julian Saborio, 6-2, on court two. Freshman duo Rafael Wagner and Eric Samuelsson notched their second victory together on court three, defeating Alberto Barroso-Campos and Jakub Wojcik, 6-4. On court one, Jordan Daigle and Justin Butsch pushed it to a tiebreaker after falling behind early. However, Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy pieced together the 7-6(5) victory.
Daigle won his second consecutive match on court one as he defeated Gozun in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to tie the match at 1-1.
LSU extended its lead to 2-1 as Nikola Samardzic won a hard-fought battle on court three as he took the win against Justin Roberts, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Freshman Wagner fell 4-6 in the first set to Pierre Luquet on court five but was able to edge out the win as he took the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
USF then, notched two wins on courts six and four to tie the match at 3-3. Kalyuzhnyy defeated freshman Agie Moreno, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, and Gabor Csonka fell in a three set contest, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to Barroso-Campos.
