Lady Tigers Advance to Finals at USA Juniors
EUGENE, Ore. – Two Lady Tiger freshmen earned their lanes in finals during Saturday’s opener at the 2014 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships as Jada Martin claimed a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100-meter dash and Bryiana Richardson advanced to the final in the women’s 400-meter hurdles in the event being held at Oregon’s Hayward Field.
The Top 2 finishers in each event this weekend will earn a spot on Team USA competing at the IAAF World Junior Championships also being held at the University of Oregon later this month.
Martin came up short in her first bid to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships with her fifth-place finish in the 100-meter final held Saturday night. After qualifying with her run of 11.51 seconds (+0.8) for the sixth-fastest time overall in the qualifying round, Martin clocked 11.55 (+0.9) in the final to cross the finish line in fifth place in the event.
Earning their spot on Team USA in the 100 meters were gold medalist Kaylin Whitney with a winning time of 11.10 and silver medalist Ariana Washington with a runner-up time of 11.30 to take the top two spots for the event. Martin also followed bronze medalist Teahna Daniels (11.31) and Ky Westbrook (11.43) across the finish line in the championship final on Saturday night.
Richardson has given herself the opportunity to line up in the USA Junior final in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on Sunday with a qualifying run in the preliminary round in the first event held Saturday afternoon.
Richardson clocked 59.53 for third place in the second heat and sixth place overall in the qualifying round of the event. She trailed the likes of Harvard’s Jade Miller (58.40) and Tiana Bonds (59.45) in her preliminary race as she advanced to Sunday’s final that is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. CT. Richardson will also line up against five other fellow finalists in Sydney McLaughlin (57.61), Reonna Collier (58.61), Texas A&M’s Shamier Little (59.44), Cece Jackson (59.53) and Shaelyn Grant (59.66) with the Top 2 finishers earning their spot on Team USA.
