Notes on the Tigers
The Tigers posted a 2-1 series victory at No. 10 Ole Miss last weekend, marking LSU’s fourth straight SEC series win over the Rebels … LSU is ranked No. No. 6 in the Perfect Game poll released on Monday … LSU has appeared in the Top 10 of a major college baseball poll for 45 consecutive weeks, and the Tigers have won 20 of their 26 SEC series over the past three seasons … the Tigers have won 10 of their last 12 games heading into this week’s home contests versus Tulane and Tennessee … junior infielder Conner Hale hit .583 (7-for-12) in the Tigers’ games last week with one double, one homer, two RBI, eight runs scored and a .643 on-base percentage … in LSU’s SEC series victory at No. 10 Ole Miss, Hale hit .625 (5-for-8) with one double, one homer, one RBI, five runs scored and a .667 on-base percentage … in the Tigers’ Game 1 win over the Rebels on Thursday, Hale went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and three runs scored – he doubled with one out in the top of the 13th inning in a 3-3 game and later scored the eventual winning run in a 4-3 victory … the double was LSU’s only extra-base hit of the contest … in LSU’s Game 3 win on Saturday, Hale was 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored … his solo homer to lead off the eighth inning against Ole Miss pitcher Sam Smith extended LSU’s lead from 1-0 to 2-0 and broke Smith’s streak of retiring Tiger hitters at 10 in a row … of the seven total runs scored by LSU in the series at Ole Miss, five runs were scored by Hale … sophomore outfielder Mark Laird hit .412 (7-for-17) in the Tigers’ four games last week with one double, two RBI, three runs and a .500 on-base percentage … sophomore outfielder Andrew Stevenson batted .375 (6-for-16) last week with one double and three RBI; Stevenson is LSU’s leading hitter on the year, batting .355 with two doubles, four triples and 21 RBI … senior right-hander Kurt McCune made three appearances last week, firing a total of three shutout innings while earning two saves in the Tigers’ series victory at Ole Miss … McCune preserved LSU’s 4-3, 13-inning win on Thursday by retiring the Rebels in order in the bottom of the 13th, and he worked around a single and a walk in the ninth inning on Saturday to earn the save in a 2-0 victory … McCune on Saturday combined with Alden Cartwright, Hunter Devall and Parker Bugg to shut out Ole Miss, which entered the series as the top-hitting team in the SEC … the shutout was LSU’s 12th of the season - the Tigers had already surpassed the previous school record of 10 shutouts earlier this month when they blanked Lamar, 5-0, on April 9 … Cartwright, in his first career SEC start, worked four innings, allowing just two singles with no walks and strikeouts … he retired the first 10 Rebel batters he faced before allowing a single in the fourth … Devall was credited win the win as he entered the game to start the fifth and pitched 2.2 innings, limiting the Rebels to two hits with no walks and two strikeouts ,,, Bugg relieved Devall in the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit.
