Notes on the Tigers
The Tigers posted a three-game sweep of ninth-ranked Mississippi State last weekend, marking LSU’s eighth straight SEC series victory over the Bulldogs; Mississippi State last won an conference series over LSU in 2006 … LSU has appeared in the Top 10 of a major college baseball poll for 43 consecutive weeks, and the Tigers have won 18 of their 24 SEC series over the past three seasons … LSU coach Paul Mainieri earned his 1,200th career win on Wednesday when the Tigers defeated McNeese State, becoming only the ninth active NCAA Division I coach to reach the 1,200-win plateau … Mainieri is now 1,203-633-8 in 32 seasons as a collegiate head coach, including eight seasons at LSU … LSU’s 17-4 win over Mississippi State on Sunday marked the most runs for the Tigers in an SEC game since they scored 18 runs in a win over Florida on May 4 of last season … the Tigers collected 20 hits on Sunday, the most hits for LSU in an SEC contest since it accumulated 23 hits in a win at Mississippi State on May 16, 2009 … junior right-hander Aaron Nola fired eight shutout innings to defeat No. 9 Mississippi State on Friday … Nola limited the Bulldogs to just two singles while recording two walks and 10 strikeouts … he fired 116 pitches and did not give up a hit until the sixth inning on a lead-off single … Nola allowed just one Bulldog base runner to advance beyond first base … Nola improved to 6-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 0.47 … in 57 innings, he’s recorded 11 walks and 71 strikeouts, and opponents are hitting just. 141 against him … LSU outfielder Sean McMullen hit .583 (7-for-12) to lead the Tigers to four straight wins last week, collecting two doubles, one triple, one homer, five runs and five RBI … McMullen batted .625 (5-for-8) in the Tigers’ three-game SEC sweep of No. 9 Mississippi State with two doubles, one triple, three RBI, three runs and a .692 on-base percentage … his lead-off triple in the third inning on Friday against Mississippi State ignited a two-run rally that broke a scoreless tie in the Tigers’ eventual 3-0 victory … he also launched a two-run homer in the third inning against McNeese State on Wednesday, erasing a 2-0 deficit as the Tigers went on to post a 10-3 win … sophomore rightfielder Mark Laird batted .462 (6-for-13) in the Tigers’ four games last week with two doubles, one triple and five RBI … sophomore centerfielder Andrew Stevenson hit .429 (6-for-14) with two RBI and five runs scored, while senior third baseman Christian Ibarra batted .400 (4-for-10) with a homer, two RBI and seven runs scored … junior catcher/DH Kade Scivicque collected seven RBI in four games last week, including a grand slam – LSU’s second of the season – in Sunday’s 17-4 win over Mississippi State.
