BATON ROUGE – The LSU sand volleyball team opens its inaugural season Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT against Louisiana-Monroe at Mango’s Beach Volleyball Club.

The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free hamburger or hot dog, and the first 200 fans receive an LSU Sand Volleyball Beach Towel. Admittance to all home matches is free as part of the “Geaux Free” program.

“This is the first time we’ll be out there on the court, and I’m not sure how everyone is going to respond to that,” associate head sand coach Russell Brock said. “My goals for them are to try and execute what we’ve been training and to try and enjoy the moment. Work hard, execute and have fun.”

UL-Monroe faced its first sand volleyball competition in 2013, and the Warhawks qualified for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Championships in their inaugural year.

Tuesday’s competition marks the first of two home events. The Lady Tigers close the season by hosting the Battle on the Bayou on April 19, a tournament where they will take on both UAB and Tulane.

The team held a Purple & Gold Scrimmage Wednesday to preview the season, playing four rounds of competition, each time paired with a different partner and different competitors.

“I think Wednesday was a good taste, and it was really fun,” Brock said. “That aspect of it is really great, just to put the team out there in front of some fans and have some competition.”

All home matches in 2014 will take place at Mango’s, located off of South Sherwood Forest Boulevard in Baton Rouge.

Following the completion of the intrasquad match, LSU hosted a Purple & Gold Kids Clinic, where the team interacted with kids eighth grade and younger.
