BATON ROUGE, La. -  The LSU men’s tennis team fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 38 Alabama at Dub Robinson Stadium and defeated Alcorn St. 6-0 at Manship YMCA on Friday.

For the LSU (7-6, 0-3 SEC) and Alabama (8-6, 2-1 SEC) match, the win came down to a court-four singles match between sophomore Tam Trinh and Alabama’s Stuart Kenyon. Trinh took the first set 7-6, and Kenyon took the second 7-5. All eyes were on court four to finish the dual match, but the singles match fell in Alabama’s favor and Kenyon took the third set 6-4, which clinched victory for the Crimson Tide.

“It was a very hard-fought match, but it was very heartbreaking for our team to come so close to winning and not come out with the victory,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “I give a lot of credit to Kenyon who overcame the nerves and physical setbacks to hit some shots, and that’s what it comes down to in the SEC.”

On court one, No. 109 junior Chris Simpson upset No. 17 Daniil Proskura in a thrilling three-set victory. This is the first singles victory for Simpson in SEC play, and his third consecutive SEC singles match against a player ranked 17 or above in the ITA rankings.

Freshman Justin Butsch continues SEC play without a loss in singles after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alabama’s Sean Donohue. Butsch’s match put LSU on the board for the first time during the match and cut Alabama’s lead to one. Sophomore Harrison Kennedy defeated Alabama’s Andrew Goodwin 7-6, 6-0 on court six to tie the match at two. Simpson’s victory tied the match at three.

LSU dominated the Braves of Alcorn St. at the Manship YMCA on Friday evening. The Tigers won all three doubles matches and all of the finished singles matches.

In his first singles match as a Tiger, redshirt freshman Eric Perez clinched the victory for LSU with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six against Garry Singh Amor. Butsch had the only unfinished match, but won the first set 6-0 and led 6-5 in the second set.

“Our guys played well and we continue to show improvement, and now we’re moving on to Auburn,” Brown said.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday to take on the Auburn Tigers in Alabama at 1 p.m.
