BATON ROUGE – The newly-renovated Carl Maddox Field House will see its first college action of the 2014 indoor season on Friday afternoon and evening as the LSU Track & Field teams will play host to their annual LSU Twilight meet as their final tune up for the championship season with the SEC Indoor Championships scheduled for next week.
A full schedule of events will be on offer for fans attending the meet as the action kicks off with the field events at 1:30 p.m. CT followed by the first preliminary races on the track at 4:45 p.m. The meet will run through the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relays that are scheduled to end at approximately 8:45 p.m.
Fans can receive live up-to-the-second coverage of the Tigers and Lady Tigers competing during Friday’s competition by following @LSUTrackField on Twitter and liking LSU Track & Field on Facebook.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers are making their final preparations for the start of the championship season as the 2014 indoor campaign is quickly coming to a close with the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships slated to run from Feb. 27-March 1 in College Station, Texas, and the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships scheduled for March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M.
LSU’s squads enter the weekend ranked among the nation’s top teams as the Lady Tigers are No. 11 and the Tigers are No. 16 in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25. The squads are also ranked among the nation’s top teams in the final Track & Field News Indoor Dual Meet Rankings with the Tigers checking in at No. 5 and the Lady Tigers ranking No. 6 in the poll released Tuesday.
Friday’s meet marks the collegiate debut for the newly-renovated Carl Maddox Field House that is now in the final stages of an ongoing construction project that began following the 2013 indoor season.
The competition area at the Carl Maddox Field House now features the same Mondo track surface that is installed at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium outdoors, as well as two long jump and triple jump runways, a new pole vault runway and new throwing circles. Fans will also enjoy the permanent bleacher seating that has been installed to accommodate spectators arriving to the campus.
The locker rooms, team lounge, concessions and restroom facilities at the Carl Maddox Field House will not be available for use on Friday night, however, ancillary support facilities will be provided externally for use for both the LSU Twilight on Friday and the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Indoor State Championships on Saturday.
“We’ve seen steady progress from both our teams during each meet in what has certainly been a challenging indoor season in many ways,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “The renovations we’ve seen to the Carl Maddox Field House will create a better experience for athletes and fans alike during a meet, and we’re still working to finish up some things that we’ll be able to enjoy in future seasons.
“We’ve been able to train in the field house for just over a week now, and we’re certainly looking forward to our first opportunity to come out and compete here in what is like a brand new facility in many ways.”
This year’s LSU Twilight will feature a Louisiana flavor with eight in-state schools making the trip to Baton Rouge to compete with the Tigers and Lady Tigers during Friday’s action. Among the combined programs making up the field are Loyola-New Orleans, New Orleans, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana and Southern from in-state and Hinds Community College from neighboring Mississippi.
Other women’s programs who will be joining the Lady Tigers in the competition include Nicholls State and Tulane as they round out the nine-team field on the women’s side.
After playing host to the LSU Twilight meet on Friday, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will kick off the championship season next week with a return trip to College Station, Texas, for the third time this season as the 2014 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships will run from Feb. 27-March 1 at Texas A&M’s Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. The LSU Track & Field teams have already competed twice at Texas A&M’s facility during the 2014 season with appearances at the Texas A&M Triangular meet on Jan. 25 and Aggie Invitational on Feb. 8 in preparation for the SEC Indoor Championships.
