Notes on the Tigers
LSU opened the 2014 season with three straight victories, defeating New Orleans on Friday and Saturday, and Grambling State on Sunday … all 17 LSU position players and 13 pitchers saw action over the weekend … 15 players made their first appearances in LSU uniforms over the course of the three games … the LSU pitching staff fired two shutouts while recording a 1.33 ERA and a .163 opponent batting average … the Tigers committed just one error in three games (109 chances) … the Tigers’ 2-0 victory over New Orleans on Friday marked LSU’s 13th consecutive win in a season opener … sophomore shortstop Alex Bregman is off to a hot start, batting .545 (6-for-11) with one double, three RBI and one run scored … sophomore centerfielder Andrew Stevenson also enjoyed a productive weekend at the plate, hitting .500 (4-for-8) with two RBI … Stevenson’s three hits in Sunday’s win over Grambling State marked the first three-hit game of his LSU career … junior second baseman Conner Hale also batted .500 (4-for-8) over the weekend with one RBI and three runs scored … LSU’s first home run of the season was produced by sophomore catcher/first baseman Chris Chinea, who launched a solo shot Sunday versus Grambling … the dinger was the first of Chinea’s collegiate career … All-American junior right-hander Aaron Nola enjoyed a strong 2014 debut, defeating New Orleans on Friday night with a six-inning outing … Nola limited the Privateers to no runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts … freshman left-hander Jared Poche’ earned a win Sunday over Grambling in his LSU debut, allowing no runs on four hits in six innings with no walks and three strikeouts … junior left-hander Kyle Bouman, a junior college transfer, also posted a win in his first LSU outing, defeating New Orleans on Saturday in a game played at Zephyr Field in Metairie,La. … Bouman limited the Privateers to one run on three hits in five innings with no walks and one strikeout … Friday night’s win over New Orleans drew a paid attendance figure of 12,472, the second-highest attendance mark in LSU history … LSU’s largest paid attendance figure is 12,727 established on April 27, 2013 against South Carolina.
