Women's Tennis Fall at No. 27 Florida St., 4-1
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The No. 60 LSU women’s tennis team (4-2) fell to No. 27 Florida State (4-2) 4-1 on Saturday as part of ESPN’s College MatchDay.
“I was happy with the way we competed and the heart (we played with),” said LSU head coach Julia Sell. “The tough part is we got off to some slow starts. Florida State did a really good job of capitalizing on the big points. It wasn’t bad tennis. The score wasn’t indicative of the play.”
Due to a new ITA women’s experimental format, used for all matches shown on ESPN3, the singles matches were played first.
“I love all six going at once, the emotion down six courts,” said Sell. “I think it’s so much more exciting. As the match went on, even at the end, we had a chance to take it into the doubles. Not one fan left, they stayed the whole time. With singles first, you build the support. I’m all for it.”
On court five, Abigail Owens fell behind early but settled in to defeat Laurence Porry 6-3, 6-4.
On court three, Gabrielle Otero battled hard but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-2 to Daniela Schippers.
On court four, Ella Taylor fell to Mia Vriens 6-0, 6-1, while Joana Vale Costa lost 6-3, 6-3 to Kerrie Cartwright on court two.
On court one, Noel Scott met defeat 6-1, 6-3 at the hands of Daneika Borthwick.
The experimental format required four points to clinch the match, with the remaining matches going unfinished. The doubles matches were not played after the Seminoles went 4-1 in singles matches.
The Lady Tigers return to the court on Feb. 14 as they host USF at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium at 6 p.m. CST.
