BATON ROUGE – A winter storm might be threatening East Texas as the LSU Track & Field teams make their trip to College Station this weekend, but the 2014 indoor season heats up Saturday afternoon when the Tigers and Lady Tigers compete in their first scored meet of the year at the Texas A&M Triangular at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Saturday’s action on the track and in the field kicks off at noon CT following a brief opening ceremony at 11:50 a.m. and introduction of coaches for the teams at 11:55 a.m.
LSU Track & Field has enjoyed great success in dual-meet competition in recent seasons as the Lady Tigers are ranked No. 4 and the Tigers are ranked No. 6 in the most recent Track & Field News Dual Meet Rankings released Tuesday. They are ready to face homestanding Texas A&M and visiting Texas Tech in the nation’s top scored competition of the weekend.
Texas A&M is ranked No. 1 on the women’s side and No. 2 on the men’s side while Texas Tech is ranked No. 7 on the men’s side and No. 18 on the women’s side in the current Track & Field Dual Meet Rankings.
The Lady Tigers are the defending Texas A&M Triangular women’s team champions after scoring 107.5 points in 15 contested events to knock off Texas A&M (103.5) and Arkansas (103) in the final women’s standings. The Tigers took third place in the men’s team race with 82.5 points, trailing Texas A&M (128.5) and Arkansas (99) in the final meet standings.
The Texas A&M Triangular will be scored using the 7-5-4-3-2-1 format for individual events and a 7-5-4 format in the relays. Points will be awarded for the placement of the top two athletes from each team with each event, while only one relay for each team will score points in the two relay events.
Texas A&M will provide live streaming video of this year’s triangular throughout the competition, courtesy of its official athletics website at http://www.aggieathletics.com/.
Flash Results will provide live results for the event online at http://www.flashresults.com/. Fans can also receive live updates of the Tigers and Lady Tigers competing at the Texas A&M Triangular by liking LSU Track & Field on Facebook and following @LSUTrackField on Twitter. Updated men’s and women’s team scores will also be posted after the conclusion of each event.
“While we had a great start to the season in Birmingham last weekend, many of our athletes will be opening up in what are their primary events for the first time at Texas A&M,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “It is going to be a great scored competition between three outstanding teams on both sides, so it’s important for our athletes to go out there and give a great competitive effort with each event.
“We love competing in these types of scored meets, and this is our first opportunity to do that this season. It’s really more about place than it is performance at this meet this weekend.”
After competing against Texas A&M and Texas Tech at the Texas A&M Triangular on Saturday afternoon, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will head to Albuquerque, N.M., next weekend to compete at the New Mexico Team Invitational being held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, Feb. 1. It marks their first of two trips to Albuquerque during this indoor season as the Albuquerque Convention Center will be the site of the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships scheduled to run March 14-15.
