Former Tiger Venus Advances in Australian Open
BATON ROUGE -- Former LSU All-American Michael Venus and partner Yuki Bhambri won a first-round doubles match 6-2, 7-5, over Roberto Bautista Agut and Daniel Gimeno-Traver Tuesday at the Australian Open.
“I'm very excited to play in my first main draw grand slam, it is something that I have dreamt about and been working towards for a long time,” Venus said. “Yuki and I both played very well (Wednesday) so we are hoping to carry some of that form into the next round on Friday.”
Venus said his time at LSU helped him become not only a better tennis player but also a better person.
“I believe with Ken (Skupksi), Neal (Skupksi), James (Cluskey) and myself doing well on tour it is showing the hard work that Jeff (Brown) and Danny (Bryan) put in while we were in college and also shows future tigers what can be achieved if you go to LSU,” Venus said.
In 2009, Venus was named an ITA Singles and Doubles All-American and received both Southeastern Conference and Louisiana Player of the Year honors. In 2008, Venus was the first Tiger in the history of the program to capture the D’Novo/ITA All-American title.
Venus and Bhambri play again on Thursday, Jan. 15, with an opponent to be determined. Matchups can be found online Thursday morning at http://www.ausopen.com/.
