BATON ROUGE – LSU senior gymnast Sarie Morrison has been named the Southeastern Conference Event Specialist of the Week for her performance against Centenary, the league office announced Tuesday.
Morrison picked up where she left off last season by shining in performances on vault and bars, the two events she specializes in each meet.
The Dallas, Texas, native captured the vault and bars titles against Centenary with identical scores of 9.925 on each event, helping LSU (1-0) record the highest team score in a season opener in school history and the second-best score of the opening weekend in college gymnastics with a 197.200.
The vault title is the eighth of her career, while the bars title is Morrison’s 21st, extending her school-record career total.
It marks the third time Morrison has earned SEC specialist of the week. She also earned the honor after strong performances against North Carolina State and Arkansas last season.
No. 2 LSU is back in action Friday when the Tigers open SEC competition at No. 9 Georgia. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. CT from Stegeman Coliseum.
