Tennis Picks Up Four Wins at Key Biscayne
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – Four members of the LSU men's tennis team finished with singles wins in the first day of competition at the Key Biscayne Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.
“We had a few good wins and everyone competed in the heat, so it was great conditioning and preparation,” said LSU head coach Jeff Brown. “We look to take a few things we saw today and improve.”
Arias quickly defeated Denver’s Yannik James on court five, 6-1, 6-2. Kennedy beat Michigan’s Barrett Franks on court six, 6-4, 6-1, and Butsch defeated Michael Zhu of Michigan on court four 6-3, 6-1. On court eight, Busch defeated Michigan’s Tyler Gardner 6-5(3), 6-3.
On court three, sophomore Tam Trinh fell in a hard-fought three-set battle to Denver’s Alex Clinkenbeard, 6-5, 4-6, 6-5. No. 72 junior Chris Simpson fell on court one to Denver’s 86th-ranked Henry Craig, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Andrew Korinek and freshman Eric Perez both fell in straight sets on courts two and seven, respectively. Korinek fell to Michigan’s Justin Rossi, 6-3, 6-4. Perez lost to Denver’s Aidan Talcott, 6-5(3), 6-3.
Throughout the months of January and February, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) will use an experimental scoring format. Each singles match is two out of three sets, will use no-ad scoring and will have tiebreaker at 5-all in each set.
LSU’s doubles matches were postponed on Sunday due to rain. The matches are rescheduled for Monday. Action for the Tigers will start at 8:30 a.m. CT with singles vs. random opponents from Texas, Michigan and Denver.
