TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshman Zakary Rowton posted a season high score and earned a fifth place finish on the 3-meter springboard to conclude the first day of the Alabama Invitational. Rowton’s score of 324.80 is 12 points better than his previous high score and enough for a zone qualifying score.
In addition to Rowton, Kevin Leong finished eight with a score of 310.60.
Katie Lagarde is the lone female diver. Lagarde finished the 1-meter springboard with a score of 210.95 in prelims and 197.95 in the finals.
"Overall we had a great day," LSU graduate assistant coach Eric Sehn said. "I am proud of how Katie and Zak stepped up in the final by making changes and not holding anything back. Katie went 210.95 in the prelim which is a personal best. Both freshman showed great promise by getting personal bests but still have a lot of room to improve. There was some great diving with the two other SEC schools and it really shows the level of diving they are going to see at conference championships."
All three divers will return to the pool tomorrow morning for day two of competition. Lagarde will compete on the 3-meter springboard while Rowton and Leong will compete on the 1-meter springboard. Day two begins at 11:00 a.m. with finals at 6:30 p.m.
The remainder of the team kicks off competition tomorrow morning in Austin, Texas for the USA Winter Diving Championships. Seniors Sean McKinney and Alex Bettridge take to the board for the first day. McKinney will compete on the 1-meter while Bettridge will compete on the 3-meter. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. with finals at 5:30 p.m.
