GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Following a narrow miss on a breakaway by freshman striker Summer Clarke seventh minute of play, the 25th-ranked Tigers were unable to find an answer for the Florida attack while falling 3-0 to the No. 8-ranked Gators for its second-straight Southeastern Conference defeat on Sunday afternoon at James G. Pressly Stadium.
Clarke nearly put the Tigers (9-5-2, 5-2-1 SEC) on the board first early in the match when she was played through the Florida (12-3-1, 6-2) defense by fellow freshman Megan Lee.
Clarke took two touches into the penalty area and drew Florida goalkeeper Nora Neset Gjoen off her line to defend before slotted a left-footed shot through the six-yard box and just inches wide of the right post for an opportunity that would have given the freshman standout her ninth goal of the season just over six minutes from the opening kickoff.
The LSU defense limited the Tigers to just five shots in the first half, but two of those shots found the back of the net as freshman striker Savannah Jordan buried both of her attempts in the half.
Jordan scored the breakthrough on 22 minutes as she fired a 12-yard strike inside the right post for her 14th goal of the season. Following a turnover by the Tigers near the halfway line, Florida’s freshman midfielder Pamela Begic took possession down the left side and centered a pass into the area to Jordan for the finish.
Jordan then pushed Florida’s lead to 2-0 before the break with an unassisted goal off a throw in as she dribbled across the top of the penalty area and fired a right-footed strike inside the right post in the 40th minute.
Florida’s junior midfielder Annie Speese then put the game out of reach in the 62nd minute of play when she curled a 20-yard free kick inside the right post for her first goal of the season at the 61:38 mark. After calling a foul on the Tigers with a hand ball just outside the area, Speese stepped up and curled her right-footed strike around the LSU wall and into the net to give the Gators a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend when they welcome the Georgia Bulldogs to Baton Rouge on Friday night for their final home match of the 2013 season that is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. CT at the LSU Soccer Stadium. They will then travel to Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 27 for a match that will kick off at noon CT at the UK Soccer Complex.
It will be “Senior Night” on Friday night at the LSU Soccer Stadium as seven Tiger seniors will make their final appearance for the Tigers on their home field. Among those being honored prior to kickoff against Georgia is Nina Anderson, Emily Cancienne, Addie Eggleston, Megan Kinneman, Nicole McLaughlin Danielle Murphy and Alex Ramsey.
