BATON ROUGE – The LSU sand volleyball program has chosen five players for its inaugural team that will begin competition in spring 2014 as announced Wednesday by head coach Fran Flory.
The five players selected from the recent tryouts that were held in mid-September at Mango’s are Rachel Barber, Victoria Boraski, Kaitlin Hatcher, Emma Hiller and former indoor volleyball standout Meghan Mannari.
“The tryouts for the 2014 sand volleyball team went extremely well,” Flory said. “We are excited about adding a new sport and look forward to the season.”
Mannari is no stranger to the LSU volleyball program as she is a four-year letter winner for the indoor team. NCAA rules allow Mannari one additional year of eligibility to play sand volleyball. While on the indoor team, Mannari anchored LSU’s back row from the libero position and amassed over 1,000 career digs. She registered a career-high 40 digs during LSU’s four-set win at Auburn during the 2012 season. The 40 digs were second-most in program history for a single match.
Mannari continued LSU’s legacy as a participant at the 2012 USA Volleyball A2 Program where she captured a silver medal. Over her career, Mannari secured 2011 AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention, 2011 All-SEC Second Team, 2011 and 2012 Louisiana Libero of the Year and was a four-time SEC Defensive Player of the Week recipient.
LSU sand volleyball will begin competition in March and will include tournaments at Florida State, Florida International and South Carolina in addition to a home tournament at Mango’s. The team will also compete in several dual matches throughout the season.
As part of “Sand Volleyball Night”, the five players will be introduced in between the second and third sets of the indoor team’s match against Ole Miss on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Maravich Center, and admission is free courtesy of the Advocate.
