LSU is coming off its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2008 and the Lady Tigers are poised for an even bigger season in 2013-14. An early pre-season poll by ESPN.com ranked LSU No. 16 in the nation next season in what will be head coach Nikki Caldwell’s third year with the program.
Caldwell, one of the nation’s elite coaches, has compiled a 45-23 record in two seasons at LSU, including 11 victories over ranked teams. In addition, the Lady Tigers under Caldwell have made the Maravich Center a tough place to play with a 28-7 record the past two years.
A veteran LSU team will take the floor in 2013-14 led by seniors Theresa Plaisance, Jeanne Kenney and Shanece McKinney. Plaisance will be a National Player of the Year candidate after leading the Southeastern Conference in scoring this season and ranking in the top 15 nationally in blocked shots. Kenney, a Baton Rouge native, enters her final season with 257 career assists.
LSU also returns freshman All-America guard Danielle Ballard, who shattered the single-season school record for steals. Ballard, one of the nation’s most exciting players, will be joined by a talented recruiting class that includes top-20 player Raigyne Moncrief, Jasmine Rhodes, Japan native Rina Hill and junior college All-America guard Dashawn Harden.
