INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- LSU freshman diver Cassie Weil picked up NCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors on the three-meter springboard during the second day of competition at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
Weil scored six team points for LSU by finishing 11th on the three-meter with a third place consolation final score of 337.50. With her performance, the Hillsboro, Ore., native became LSU’s eighth All-American on the three-meter springboard and Diving Coach Doug Shaffer’s 14th All-American.
“I couldn’t be happier or prouder of Cassie’s performance on the three-meter springboard,” Shaffer said. “She really demonstrated maturity, given her youth. She was the highest scoring true freshman in the event. She put LSU on the board.”
Weil narrowly missed making the championship final after taking ninth in the prelims with a score of 335.65, which was less than five points of the eighth place scorer. The freshman will have another opportunity tomorrow on the platform, an event where she owns LSU’s second best all-time score of 299.10.
“She is right in line and on track for having her best performance on platform tomorrow,” Shaffer said. “She has the most experience and confidence on platform. We’re hopeful that she doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel and does what she has trained for. If she does that, we will have another successful day.”
Junior swimmer Torrey Bussey ended her 100 breaststroke (1:00.45) run in 21st place, her highest NCAA individual finish. Bussey will compete in the 200 breast tomorrow.
“Torrey put in a great 100, but her timing was a little off on her first wall and that was the difference in her race,” Swimming Coach Dave Geyer said. “If she had nailed that wall, then she would have had a personal best time and a shot at making it back to the finals.”
The 200 medley relay team of freshman Caley Oquist, Bussey, junior Rainey White and sophomore Amber Carter finished in 20th with a mark of 1:38.66.
“We missed an opportunity to get a second swim tonight,” Geyer said. “The relay field was wide open and we were just a little off on each split compared to where we were at SEC’s.”
Day three finals will air live on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. (CT) Various championship races will air on tape delay on ESPNU at 7 p.m. (CT) on March 27.
