BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU starting pitcher Ryan Eades recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts, propelling fourth-ranked LSU (9-1) to a 7-1 victory over Brown (0-2).
Eades (2-0) allowed no earned runs on five hits in six innings of work, throwing 79 pitches. His performance marked the second straight game an LSU starting pitcher recorded 11 strikeouts in a game (Aaron Nola struck out 11 against Brown Friday night).
Brown starting pitcher Heath Mayo (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs on 11 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.
Brown will face Nicholls State at 11 a.m. Sunday in Alex Box Stadium, and LSU will meet Nicholls at 3 p.m. Sunday. Fans wishing to attend the 11 a.m. Brown-Nicholls game must present Sunday's LSU game ticket in order to be admitted to the stadium.
"Eades really threw the ball well and had great command all night," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We wanted to have him throw 80 pitches and he was extremely efficient the entire outing. This was probably the coldest night we've had during my seven years at LSU, but we managed to generate some offense in difficult conditions. I thought we had some productive at-bats and came through with hits at the right time."
In the second inning, Brown took a 1-0 lead after a throwing error from first baseman Mason Katz on a tough ground ball.
LSU came out strong in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff double from designated hitter Tyler Moore. Third baseman Christian Ibarra sent Moore home with an opposite-field single to tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the inning the Tigers went ahead for good when Ibarra scored when right fielder Chris Sciambra grounded into a double play.
LSU added cushion in the eighth with another RBI from Rhymes, scoring center fielder Mark Laird, who had reached on a bunt single. Another run came in the eighth on a fielder's choice grounder from Katz, accounting for the final 7-1 tally.
