Nominee for SEC Pitcher of the Week

Rachele Fico, Sr., Oxford, Connecticut
Fico picked up right she left off after being named a 2012 NFCA All-America First-Team pick. All three of her appearances during opening weekend came against NCAA Regional and 40-win programs from a season ago. She tossed a pair of shutouts which included a triumph over No. 22 North Carolina and was fueled by a 14-strikeout effort against Tulsa during a 1-0 victory in 10 innings. The 14 strikeouts were the second-most in her career only behind her 18Ks versus Syracuse at the 2011 NCAA College Station Regional. She moves to within 16 strikeouts of becoming the fifth player in program history to reach 600 career Ks.

Notes on the Tigers
After making the program's third Women's College World Series appearance in 2012, LSU won four of its five games to open Beth Torina's second season with the Tigers. Allison Falcon and Rachele Fico collected Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team honors in the process. Falcon fueled the offense with a .429 batting average and added three RBIs. Three of her six hits were doubles. From the leadoff spot, A.J. Andrews tallied five hits and three stolen bases. Fico sparked the pitching staff and won both of her decisions with a paltry 0.41 ERA. She racked up 20 strikeouts, and LSU's pitching staff started the season with 24.2 straight scoreless. The senior right-hander moved within 16 Ks of becoming the fifth pitcher in program history to reach 600 strikeouts. The Tigers had six players make their career debuts. Four of the five freshmen secured their first career hits and RBIs. Bianka Bell turned in a .286 clip and three RBIs, while Kellsi Kloss cranked a solo home during LSU's 1-0 victory over Purdue. In the circle, Ashley Czechner earned her first career win in the Purple and Gold with a complete game effort versus Hampton. Meghan Patterson split her decisions and was a tough-luck loser in her first career start against a ranked opponent, No. 22 North Carolina, during the weekend finale. LSU travels to Ole Miss for a Wednesday non-conference tilt before welcoming Memphis, Nicholls State, North Dakota State and Virginia for the Purple & Gold Challenge in Tiger Park.
