BATON ROUGE - LSU junior gymnast Maliah Mathis was honored as the SEC Specialist of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mathis turned in one of the best meets of her career Saturday at the Metroplex Challenge as she helped propel LSU to the first 197 team score in three seasons with a 197.100 at the meet.
Mathis competed on vault and floor at Metroplex as she has done all season, and she scored a 9.90 in both events to earn second place on each event.
The 9.90 on vault matched her career high that she scored as a freshman at Alabama on March 11, 2011, and the 9.90 on floor marked a season high.
Mathis played an integral part in LSU's 49.500 on vault at Metroplex, the highest team vault score since 2008 and the sixth-highest vault total in school history.
She also was a main contributor to the Tigers' 49.400 score on floor that lifted the team to a tie for No. 1 in the country in the event with a 49.344 average.
Mathis has been solid all season on vault and floor, averaging a 9.863 on vault and 9.831 on floor.
The SEC honor is the first of Mathis' career and the fourth of the season for the Tigers. Rheagan Courville and Lloimincia Hall have each garnered SEC Gymnast of the Week honors, and Sarie Morrison was recognized as SEC Specialist of the Week after the North Carolina State meet.
No. 6 LSU (5-2) travels to Lexington, Ky., to take on 16th-ranked Kentucky at 6 p.m. CT Friday in Memorial Coliseum. Live audio of the meet will be available free of charge inside the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.
