Courville, Morrison Earn SEC Gymnastics Honors
BATON ROUGE - LSU sophomore gymnast Rheagan Courville was named Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week and junior Sarie Morrison earned SEC Specialist of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
A three-time selection as SEC Freshman of the Week last season, this marks Courville's first gymnast of the week award.
This is the first year the SEC has awarded specialist of the week, and Morrison is the first recipient.
Courville scored the nation's highest all-around total in the first week of competition, tying her career mark with a 39.500 to help lead LSU to a 196.075-194.975 win against 22nd-ranked North Carolina State. Courville took home her first three individual titles of the season, winning the all-around, beam and floor titles. She scored a 9.85 on vault, 9.80 on bars, 9.875 on beam and a career-best 9.975 on floor.
Her 39.500 edged out UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa who scored a 39.475 for the top all-around mark over the weekend, and both Courville and Zamarripa posted a 9.975 on floor to earn the nation's highest floor score after one week of competition.
Courville's 39.500 also ranks as the best opening meet all-around score for a Tiger since Ashleigh Clare-Kearney opened the 2008 season with a 39.600 at the Cancun Classic. Her 9.975 on floor is the second-best floor score in a season opener in LSU history, only ranking behind Nicki Arnstad's 10.0 in the 2002 Super Six Challenge.
Morrison shined in LSU's season opener against the Wolfpack. She captured individual titles in both events she competed - vault and bars. Morrison scored the first 9.90 of the season for the Tigers with a great vault, and she followed that up with a solid bars routine to score a 9.825 and win the event title. It marked the ninth bars title and fifth vault title of her career.
No. 8 LSU (1-0) returns to action Friday when the Tigers play host to No. 3 Florida (1-0) at 7 p.m. CT inside the Maravich Center. Tickets are still available at www.LSUtix.net.
