BATON ROUGE - Four former LSU Lady Tiger golfers, all All-Americans or national champions during their career, go for LPGA status for the 2013 season when the Final Stage of LPGA Qualifying begins Wednesday on the Champions and Legends Course of LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
A total of 122 players are taking part hoping to earn a spot on the 2013 LPGA Tour in this five-round tournament the runs through Sunday. The top 20 qualifiers on Sunday will earn Category 12 status on the 2013 Tour while players who finish 21st through 45 and ties will earn membership in Category 17. The final stage will cut to the low 70 players and ties after 72 holes. Those players making the cut will compete in the final round on the Champions Course.
Qualifiers from Stages I and II will be joined at the final stage of Q-school by current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status for 2013, along with players finishing Nos. 11-20 on the 2012 Symetra Tour money list (who do not already have LPGA status).
Katy Harris from Humble, Texas, was a first-team All-American in 2001 after finishing third in the NCAA Championships. She turned professional in 2010 and has played on both the Symetra and LPGA Tours off and on over the past two years.
Megan McChrystal was a three-time All-American at LSU, 2009-11, setting a record for the lowest single round in NCAA Championship history in 2010 when she fired a 64. She was part of the Lady Tigers' first third-place team finish in the NCAAs in 2011 and won her first professional title earlier this year on the Symetra Tour. She won over $28,000 and finished 17th on the money list.
Duncan earned LSU national recognition in 2001 when she won the United States Women's Amateur championship on the first hole of sudden death. Duncan also played for a victorious USA Curtis Cup team in 2002. She has been on the tour for several years with career earnings over $273,000.
Ernst is the newest former Lady Tiger to turn pro after leaving LSU following winning the national championship in 2011 as a freshman and helping LSU to third place finishes in both 2011 and 2012. She advanced through two stages of LPGA Qualifying and will be looking to solidify her playing status for 2013.
