BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After helping lead the LSU women's basketball team to a 2-0 record and a first-place finish at the Florida International Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Lady Tiger guard Danielle Ballard has been recognized as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Ballard, a native of Memphis, Tenn., was spectacular over the weekend, averaging 19.0 points and providing solid perimeter defense to earn a spot on the FIU Classic All-Tournament Team. She carried the Lady Tigers to their highest ranked non-conference win since 2010 in a 71-63 victory over No. 12 West Virginia on Friday.

Ballard poured in a career-best 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. The 25 points were the most by an LSU true freshman in a game since LaSondra Barrett had 27 at Arkansas on Jan. 8, 2009. It was also the highest scoring output by any LSU player in a game since Jan. 13, 2011. Ballard scored the final 10 points of the first half for LSU.

In a 76-69 win over FIU on Sunday, Ballard scored 13 points highlighted by a one-on-one move that resulted in a bucket as the first half horn sounded. She also collected a clutch steal in the final minutes that led to two free throws that put the game away.

Ballard is one of four LSU players averaging double-figures on the season. She is up to 12.6 points per game, while ranking fourth in the SEC in steals per contest with 3.0. Ballard is tops among all freshmen in the league in that category.

Ballard and the Lady Tigers (3-2) open a six-game homestand in the month of December against NC State at 2 p.m. CT Sunday in the Maravich Center.
