Cross Country Teams Ready for SEC Championships
BATON ROUGE - The LSU men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the 2012 SEC Cross Country Championship meet to take place on Friday at Percy Warner Park.
The Lady Tigers are coming off of a competitive streak after finishing first at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede, first at the LSU Invitational and fourth at Chile Pepper Festival.
Throughout the season, the Lady Tigers have been led by a core group of upperclassmen, including seniors Laura Carleton, Dakota Goodman, Brea Goodman and Charlene Lipsey and junior Natoya Goule.
"We are all excited because we will have two more races," Carleton said. "These are the ones you really want to do well on."
"I think if the girls run extremely well, they can finish as high as second to fifth place," LSU head coach Mark Elliott said. "Our goal is to be second at least. It is rare that we have the opportunity to be able to do this well, so we plan to make the most of it."
Carleton has been the lead runner for the Lady Tigers this season finishing within the top five at every meet and being awarded the title of Women's SEC Runner of the Week earlier this season.
On the men's side, the Tigers have continued to improve race-by-race leading up to the SEC Championship race.
"I know we haven't had the strongest showing at a lot of these meets," senior men's runner Roger Cooke said. "But we definitely have a team that works well together and gets along. We have some talented guys. We just need to pack the top five guys together and finish."
The women's 6k race is scheduled for a 10 a.m. CDT start, while the men's 8k race will begin at 11 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held following both races.
