TULSA, Okla. - LSU men's tennis sophomore Chris Simpson rallied to win his second-round singles match and move into the final round of the qualifying draw Tuesday in the ITA All-American Championships at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Ranked No. 58 nationally and competing as the draw's No. 6 seed, Simpson defeated longtime friend and 106th-ranked Connor Glennon of Memphis 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4.

With the win Simpson improved his career singles record to 22-11, including a 2-0 mark this season, and he upped his record against ranked opponents to 3-3.

Simpson will face 89th-ranked and No. 27 seed Francisco Dias of George Washington in the third round, and the victor will clinch a spot in the main draw. First serve is set for 9:30 a.m. CT Wednesday.

"Chris did a great job in a tough situation playing against a friend," head coach Jeff Brown said. "They had a great battle, and Chris responded to an opponent who started out hot. He made some adjustments and played well to win the match."

In a qualifying singles consolation match, Boris Arias took the first set from Virginia's Harrison Richmond, but Arias was unable to maintain the momentum as he fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

"Boris played a strong player from Virginia," Brown said. "He did a good job jumping out early on him. The other guy regrouped well, but Boris showed a lot of improvement today."

Although his singles competition is finished, Arias will team up with Simpson in the doubles main draw. The duo, ranked 24th nationally, will have to wait to find out who they will play until qualifying doubles wraps up Wednesday.

After receiving a first-round bye, Olivier Borsos and Tam Trinh played their first match together in the qualifying doubles second round, but the duo came up short against Virginia's Alex Domijan and Richmond 8-3.

"Doubles ran into a team that was a little more experienced because Domijan has been around for awhile," Brown said. "Olivier and Tam fought hard, and we are learning a lot about our personnel on a daily basis as they go through these early matches."

Main draw competition is scheduled to begin Thursday where Borsos will play his first singles match of the season.
