BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The LSU men's golf team traded a season-low 2-under par 286 in the opening round with a 2-over par 290 in the second round to wrap up Monday's action in second place at even-par 576 at the 2012 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Hosted by Graeme McDowell at Shoal Creek Country Club.

The Tigers, who started the 2012 fall season two weeks ago by tying for fourth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic, wrapped up the opening day of competition in Birmingham just five shots off the pace of the 5-under par 571 set by the Houston Cougars in taking the 36-hole lead.

Houston opened the championship with a 4-over par 292 to tie for fifth place in the morning round before adding a tournament-low 9-under par 279 to take the lead in the clubhouse at 5-under 571.

LSU was led by a pair of standout sophomores in Stewart Jolly and Curtis Thompson as each is eyeing an awaited top-10 finish for the first time in their collegiate careers with the Tigers.

While Thompson followed a 3-under par 69 in the first round with a 2-under 70 in the second round, Jolly opened the championship with a 2-under 70 in the morning before matching his career-low with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon as the two Tigers finished the day in a tie for second place overall at 5-under 139.

Jolly opened his 2012 fall season with his career-best finish while tying for 11th place overall at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic, while Thompson set his career-best finish as a freshman a year ago when he tied for 13th place overall at the Argent Financial Classic last spring.

They will battle the likes of Rodolfo Cazaubon of North Texas for medalist honors during Tuesday's final round as the Mean Green standout sits atop the leaderboard at 6-under par 138 for the tournament after he carded rounds of 4-under 68 and 2-under 70 in Monday's event. UAB's Sam Love and Houston's Wesley McClain finished the day two shots off the pace in a tie for fourth place at 4-under 140.

Junior Andrew Presley added a 2-under par 70 toward LSU's first-round score before finishing the day in a tie for 18th place at 2-over par 146, while fellow junior Smylie Kaufman added a 3-over par 75 to LSU's total in the afternoon round before finishing in a tie for 40th place at 8-over par 152.

While playing as an individual, fellow sophomore Myles Lewis joined Jolly and Thompson in the Top 10 of the leaderboard as he fired rounds of 2-over 74 in the opening round and a career-low 4-under 68 in the second round to finish Monday's action in a tie for seventh place at 2-under 142.

Lewis shattered his previous career-low round of 2-under par 70 that he recorded on March 12 of last year in the second round of the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.

The Tigers are paired with Houston and UAB in Tuesday's final round and will tee off as part of a second wave off the front nine beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
