BATON ROUGE - The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes as part of their academic achievements and community service for September.

Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU's Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.

September's student-athletes of the month are Mark Bowtell [Men's Tennis], Trey Granier [Football], Jerald Hawkins [Football], Therese Jernbeck [Track & Field] and Heather Magee [Soccer]. Ericka Garcia [Gymnastics] was selected as the Shaquille O'Neal CHAMPS/Student-Athlete Affairs Athlete of the Month.

Bowtell is majoring in sport administration, while Granier is a construction management major. Hawkins is a part of UCFY (University Center for Freshman Year), but plans to major in petroleum engineering. Jernbeck is undecided in her course of study, Magee is majoring in marketing and Garcia is an international studies major.

A senior all-around gymnast from Mexico City, Mexico, Garcia enters her final year as a Tiger with both athletic and community service accolades. A limiting knee injury forced her to compete only in beam her junior season, but it did not limit her impact in the community, as she earned a spot on the SEC Community Service Team for the second consecutive year in 2012. On top of her numerous visits to Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, she also recently gave her time to the International Student Orientation where she welcomed the many international students to campus. In the past year, she also volunteered her time with the Big Buddy program, with the 'Day of Mentor' Program and the Thanksgiving turkey carving event at St. Vincent de Paul.

Bowtell, a senior tennis player from County Wicklow, Ireland, returns for his fifth year, as he was unable to compete in the 2012 spring season. He has recorded 50 singles victories over his first three seasons sparked by a team-best 12 overall dual victories during the 2010 campaign. Off the court, Bowtell is a 2010 and 2012 SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient.

A freshman linebacker from Thibodaux, La., Granier joins the Tigers with the capability of competing as either a middle or outside linebacker. The 19th ranked player in Louisiana from his recruiting class gained an ESPN 2011 All-Louisiana Football Team selection as an honorable mention.

Hawkins, a freshman offensive lineman from Baldwin, La., also begins his first year as a Tiger as an offensive tackle prospect and ranked as the No. 15 player in the state by Rivals.com and No. 20 by ESPN.com. His ability to excel on both offense and defense earned him an LSWA 2A All-State Honorable Mention selection.

A freshman multi-event track & field athlete from Stockholm, Sweden, Jernbeck begins her LSU career with numerous accolades already under her belt, including a 12th-place finish in the 2011 European Juniors Athletics Championship in the women's heptathlon. The Swedish National Team member will prove to be an asset for the Tigers as she has competed in 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin.

Magee, a freshman midfielder from Colleyville, Texas, joins the Tigers as a four-star recruit and the No. 31-ranked prospect nationally by TopDrawerSoccer.com. She has already made an instant impact with two goals and an assist en route to a team-leading five points. Magee scored what proved to be the game-winner in LSU's 2-1 victory over Memphis on Monday. The decorated athlete also played for the Region III Olympic Development Program Team from 2009-11 and also earned a spot on the 2009 U-17 U.S. Women's National Team Player Pool prior to LSU.

For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
