ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The LSU men's golf team is off to a strong start to the 2012-13 campaign after tying for fourth place at the 24th-annual Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic this weekend as the Tigers were among the elite performers in an NCAA Championships caliber field competing at The Farm Golf Club.

In what LSU head coach Chuck Winstead called a "solid week" for the team, the Tigers posted a score of 7-over par 871 in 54 holes to take home a tie for fourth place with No. 24-ranked Clemson.

The No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Texas Longhorns were impressive in the season opener while posting a 13-under par 851 in three rounds to claim a five-shot win over No. 19-ranked Georgia that featured a tournament record 22-under par 266 in Saturday's second round. No. 2-ranked Alabama scored a third-place finish as the defending tournament champion with its 1-over 865 for the weekend.

Texas freshman Brandon Stone made it a clean sweep for the Longhorns as he took the individual title for his collegiate debut after firing a winning 54-hole score of 12-under 204 for the weekend. Stone ended the event two shots clear of teammate Jordan Spieth and Georgia's T.J. Mitchell.

This year's championship also featured No. 24-ranked Chattanooga (875) in seventh place, No. 15-ranked North Florida (879) in ninth place, No. 7-ranked Georgia Tech (886) in a tie for 11th place overall and No. 6-ranked Auburn (890) in 14th place overall in the final team standings.

Sophomore Stewart Jolly earned his best collegiate finish to lead the Tigers in their season opener after he fired a second-straight round of 1-under par 71 in Sunday's finale to tie for 11th place with a career-low of 2-under par 214 for the weekend. Jolly shattered his previous best 54-hole tournament score of 3-over 219 to tie for 14th place at the 2011 David Toms Intercollegiate as a freshman last season.

Jolly birdied a pair of par-fives on holes No. 2 and No. 12 along with his only bogey of the day at the par-three 11th hole en route to a team-leading 1-under par 71 in Sunday's final round.

After recording rounds of 1-under 71 on Friday and 2-under 70 on Saturday, sophomore Curtis Thompson wrapped up the tournament with a 3-over 75 on Sunday to match his career-low 54-hole score of even-par 216 to tie for 14th place on the final leaderboard as one of the team leaders for the weekend.

Junior Landon Lyons and freshman Zach Wright added matching scores of 4-over par 76 to the team total in Sunday's final round as Wright tied for 31st place at 6-over 222 in his collegiate debut and Lyons ended with three-straight rounds of 76 to tie for 62nd place at 12-over 228.

After opening the season with rounds of 1-under par 71 and even-par 72, junior All-SEC honoree Andrew Presley shot 80 in the final round to tie for 40th place overall at 7-over par 223 in the season opener.

With their season opener at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic now in the books, The Tigers will return to action in two weeks with a trip to Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., for an appearance at this year's Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The Tigers will then play host to the 2012 David Toms Intercollegiate at the University Club on Oct. 6-7.
