Golf Off to Fast Start at Carpet Capital Classic
ROCKY FACE, Ga. - Led by matching scores of 1-under par 71 by junior All-SEC performer Andrew Presley and sophomore Curtis Thompson, the LSU men's golf team opened its 2012 fall season Friday by firing a 2-under par 286 at The Farm Golf Club to finish in third place following the opening round of the 24th-annual Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic being held this weekend.
The Tigers wrapped up the day eight shots off the pace in third place in the team standings as Georgia had a 10-under par 278 to take an early six-shot lead over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
By firing matching rounds of 71 on Friday, both Presley and Thompson ended the afternoon tied for 15th place on the leaderboard and six shots off the pace of the 7-under 65 by Georgia's T.J. Mitchell.
Thompson fired out of the blocks in his season-opening round with birdies on three of his first five holes at the par-four first hole, par-four third hole and par-three fifth hole to quickly drop to 3-under par for that effort. He then surrendered a shot at the par-three eighth hole to make the turn at 2-under par. After giving up two shots with back-to-back bogeys at the par-five 15th and par-four 16th holes, Thompson finished his day in red figures at 1-under 71 with a birdie at the par-four 18th hole.
Presley traded shots right out of the gate as he followed his birdie at hole No. 1 with a bogey at hole No. 2 before reeling off seven-straight pars to make the turn at even-par for his round. He then made two birdies at the par-three 11th and par-five 15th holes before making bogey at the 18th hole for his 71.
Jolly carded a team-leading five birdies on the day along with five bogeys for a 72 in his first round of the season. Wright bounced back from a 2-over par front nine by squaring his round with four birdies and one double bogey on the back nine for a 72 in his collegiate debut with the Tigers.
Junior Landon Lyons added a score of 4-over par 76 in Friday's opening round to wrap up the day in a tie for 50th place in the individual standings with two rounds still to play.
Georgia All-American T.J. Mitchell opened with a 7-under par 65 to take a two-shot lead over Alabama's Bobby Wyatt in the race for medalist honors. Auburn's Niclas Carlsson and Georgia's Lee McCoy posted matching scores of 4-under par 68 to finish the day in a tie for third place in the standings.
The Tigers will tee off in the third and final wave off the front nine in Saturday's second round as they are paired with SEC rivals Alabama and Georgia with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT.
