BATON ROUGE -- The LSU football team will begin the 2012 season ranked No. 3 by the Associated Press, as the writers voted USC No. 1 followed by Alabama.

Only twice in school history have the Tigers been ranked higher in the AP Top 25 to start the season: No. 1 1959 and No. 2 2007.

Five SEC teams were ranked in the Top 10, as Georgia (sixth), South Carolina (ninth) and Arkansas (10th) joined the 2011 BCS Championship contenders in the poll's initial top 10.

From AP writer Ralph D. Russo: "The Tigers were poised to start the season No. 1 before Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu got kicked off the team a week ago.

"In light of that development, the AP extended the voting deadline. Before Mathieu was dismissed...LSU had received 28 of a possible 60 first-place votes. USC was a close second with 22 first-place votes and Alabama was third with nine."

According to Birmingham News reporter Jon Soloman (@jonsol), this is the first time since 1997 that the coaches and writers' preseason polls have been split.

Since 2000, the writers have accurately predicted the AP national championship trophy winner once, USC in 2004. USC vacated its 2004 BCS championship, though the AP did not take back it's title.

LSU was No. 1 in the coaches' preseason poll that was released on Aug. 2.
