Softball to Host NPF All-Stars on Oct. 19
BATON ROUGE - For the second consecutive season, the LSU softball team will play host to the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) All-Stars at Tiger Park. The exhibition contest will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 19 as part of the NPF's Back to School Tour.
The NPF All-Stars will consist of players from all four of the NPF's professional teams (Akron Racers, Chicago Bandits, USSSA Florida Pride and Carolina Diamonds). The Tigers dropped a 4-1 decision after having the NPF All-Stars down to its final strike last fall. Ashley Langoni connected for a solo home run to give LSU a 1-0 lead after six innings.
The Pride, coached by Beth Torina, has posted a 23-12 record and hold a 4.5 game advantage atop the NPF standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. The 2012 NPF Championship Series is slated for August 23-26 in Rosemont, Ill. hosted by the Chicago Bandits.
The 2012 NPF Back to School Tour will make 21 stops across 16 states, including eight against teams ranked in the final edition of the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Those programs include No. 2 Oklahoma (Nov. 1), No. 7 LSU (Oct. 19), No. 12 Louisiana Lafayette (Oct. 20), No. 13 Arizona (Oct. 24), No. 14 Washington (Oct. 14), No. 15 Michigan (Oct. 4), No. 18 Florida (Oct. 22) and No. 20 UCLA (Oct. 27).
"Our program is very excited to once again host the NPF at Tiger Park," Torina said. "This year's event will be even more exciting as we bring former All-American Brittany Mack back to Tiger Park. It's such a great opportunity for our team, our fans and the Baton Rouge community to be exposed to some of the best softball in the world. It's also a wonderful way for all of us to show our support and to continue to help grow professional sports opportunities for women."
The NPF is headquartered in Nashville, Tenn. The league, created to give elite female fastpitch players the opportunity to pursue a professional career in their chosen sport, has operated since 1997 under the names of Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women's Pro Softball League (WPSL).
Ticket information and the remainder of LSU's fall schedule will be released at a later date.
