BATON ROUGE - LSU first baseman Mason Katz launched a two-run homer Saturday night and right-hander Ryan Eades allowed one run in seven innings of work as the 10th-ranked Tigers edged No. 21 Mississippi State, 4-3, in Alex Box Stadium.

LSU, which defeated the Bulldogs, 3-2, in 10 innings on Friday night, improved to 16-3 overall and 2-0 in the SEC. Mississippi State fell to 14-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. Freshman right-hander Aaron Nola will start on the mound for the Tigers, while the Bulldogs will counter with junior right-hander Kendall Graveman.

LSU junior right-hander Nick Goody earned his second save of the season as Mississippi State attempted to rally from a 4-2 deficit entering the ninth inning.

Third baseman Phillip Casey led off the MSU ninth with a single, and he moved to second when Goody walked catcher Mitch Slauter. Second baseman Matthew Britton laid down a sacrifice bunt, and all three runners were safe when LSU catcher Ty Ross' throw to second base was not in time.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Goody induced a shallow fly ball to center field from shortstop Adam Frazier for the first out. Rightfielder Demarcus Henderson's sacrifice fly to center scored Casey from third and narrowed the deficit to 4-3.

Goody, however, struck out designated hitter Trey Porter with runners at first and second to end the game.

"I'm spent," said a happy LSU coach Paul Mainieri after the game. "That was another gritty effort by our team to earn a very tough win. Those games add a few more gray hairs to the coach's  head, but we'll certainly take them. It's not often you win a game by scoring four runs on only four hits, but our players came through in the most critical situations in the game."

Eades (4-1) worked seven innings for the win, limiting the Bulldogs to one run on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Bulldog starter Nick Routt when Katz unloaded a two-run homer, his fourth dinger of the season.

The Bulldogs responded with a run in the top of the third against Eades Britton singled and later scored on a single by Porter.

LSU increased its lead to 3-1 in the fourth as Ross walked and was sacrificed to second by shortstop Austin Nola. Third baseman Tyler Hanover delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Ross.

Centerfielder Chris Sciambra's RBI single in the sixth scored Hanover and gave the Tigers a 4-1 advantage.

Porter cut the gap to 4-2 with a one-out solo homer in the eighth off of LSU reliever Brent Bonvillain. Nick Rumbelow relieved Bonvillain and sandwiched a walk between two strikeouts to end the MSU threat.

Routt (1-2) was charged with the loss as he surrendered three runs on two hits in 3.2 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Right-hander Evan Mitchell worked the final 4.1 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
