BATON ROUGE -- The 17th-ranked Tigers came up big on Sunday, defeating the 48th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 6-1, clinching their first SEC win of the season.

LSU (7-3, 1-1) knew they had it in the bag after junior Stefan Szacinski pulled out a tight victory over Vanderbilt's Anton Kovrigin 6-4, 7-5, clinching the match at 4-1 for the Tigers.

"It was a great feeling clinching the match, and I'm pretty sure it was my first time doing so and I am a junior," Szacinski said. "(Kovrigin) played really well, but I just managed to scrape one out. Overall, as a team, we all fought hard and it was a great victory."

The Commodores (5-7, 0-2) came out strong in doubles with an 8-6 victory by Alex DiValerio and Joe Dorn on court three over LSU's Szacinski and partner Roger Anderson.

On court two, No. 38 Olivier Borsos and Chris Simpson rallied back for the Tigers, putting away the Vanderbilt tandem of Charlie Jones and Kovrigin, 8-4.

With the doubles point on the line, it came down to the Tiger's 39th-ranked duo of Neal Skupski and James Turbervill on the top court. In an exciting match that ended in a tiebreaker, Skupski and Turbervill came out on top, winning 9-8 (4) and claiming the doubles point for LSU.

In singles, the Commodores kept things interesting, forcing the Tigers to fight hard for every victory.

Simpson gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a fast straight-set win over Blake Bazarnik, 6-3, 6-3.

On court six, Turbervill jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after the first set, but had to battle with Vanderbilt's Michael Retta to earn the 6-1, 7-6 (4) win.

LSU was up 3-0, when Skupski met defeat at the hands of Gonzalez Austin, 6-2, 7-6.

With the score at 3-1, Szacinski clinched on court four to secure the match in the Tigers' favor.

On court five, Knights finished off Vanderbilt's Joe Dorn 7-6 (6), 6-4 to extend LSU's lead to 5-1.

No. 66 Borsos capped off a successful day for the Tigers, upsetting Louisiana product, 62nd-ranked Jones in a third set super tiebreaker, finalizing the score at 6-1.

"Any SEC win is good win," head coach Jeff Brown said. "Vanderbilt is a very feisty team which you could see from the beginning. The doubles point was closely contested, but our guys did a good job of responding and ultimately coming away with the win."

After a five-match homestand, the Tigers will hit the road and travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., Friday, where they will take on No. 46 Alabama.

The two teams last met in 2011 where the Tigers pulled out a 4-2 victory over the Crimson Tide. LSU leads the all-time series 40-24-1.
