BATON ROUGE - The 2011 LSU baseball squad conducted its first preseason workout Friday beneath a cloudless blue sky in Alex Box Stadium.

"What a beautiful day to get started," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, who directed the Tigers to the 2009 College World Series title. "We couldn't have asked for better weather for our first practice.

"It was our goal to simulate the environment of Game 1 of a weekend series; we took batting practice as we would before a game, and we played a six-inning scrimmage. There's a lot of enthusiasm around the ball park, and everyone is anxious for the next three weeks to pass quickly."

The 2011 season begins on February 18, when the Tigers play host to Wake Forest in Alex Box Stadium. LSU is ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/ESPN poll released Friday. The Tigers are ranked No. 15 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 22 by Baseball America.

LSU will continue its preseason workouts this weekend, practicing at 1 p.m. Saturday and at Noon Sunday in Alex Box Stadium. All practice sessions are open to the public.
