BATON ROUGE - With a little more than one week before the LSU football team reports for fall camp, sophomore wide receiver Russell Shepard spoke to high school students on LSU's campus Tuesday as part of the Honors College FOCUS program.

Shepard, a native of Houston, Texas, addressed 35 rising high school sophomores from the greater Baton Rouge area and spoke about the importance of education in high school and beyond.

The FOCUS program immerses high-achieving high school students from under-resourced public schools in arts and humanities for two weeks in July.

The students visited all of the colleges offered at LSU, and Shepard made a surprise appearance to speak to the students while they toured the college of education.

"I realize with the area they are from and the position they are in, a lot of these kids have distractions outside of school and their homes, so any time I can give back to those kids is a great honor," Shepard said. "They want to get better and better their lives, so I am definitely here to help."

The football team reports for fall camp Aug. 4, and the Tigers will open the season at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game against North Carolina on Sept. 4.
