BATON ROUGE -- The 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are right around the corner, and both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will enter the meet ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest power ranking released by the coaches on Wednesday.

The latest collegiate track and field power ranking released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association comes just one day after the list of athletes accepted to compete in the NCAA meet was released by the NCAA selection committee.

Both squads will travel large contingents to the meet as each qualified 14 athletes and two relay teams into the competition following the conclusion of the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday.

The Tigers enter the meet with more chances to score than any other team in this year’s field as they have 17 opportunities in 13 different events, while the Lady Tigers rank second in this year’s field with a total of 19 opportunities to score in 10 different events. Both teams finished runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships a year ago.

Despite being ranked No. 1 in the country, LSU must dethrone the reigning NCAA champions to truly be considered the nation’s best. Florida State is the two-time defending champion on the men’s side, while Arizona State was crowned last year’s champion on the women’s side.

The 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set to kick off June 11 as the four-day meet will be held at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. This year’s men’s and women’s national champions will be crowned in a ceremony following the final day of competition on June 14.
