BATON ROUGE -- First baseman Matt Clark of LSU and pitcher Derek Ward of Louisiana-Monroe were named Wednesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Clark, a junior from Fontana, Calif., was named Hitter of the Week as he led the Tigers to a three-game SEC sweep of Auburn last weekend, batting 545 (6-for-11) in the series with one double, one homer, five RBI and three runs.
During LSU’s current 16-game win streak, Clark is batting .396 (21-for-53) with seven doubles, six homers and 18 RBI. On the year, Clark is hitting .333 with 12 doubles, 19 homers and 47 RBI.
Ward, a junior right-hander from Lewisville, Ark., was named Pitcher of the Week. He saw action in three of the Warhawks’ four games last week and didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings out of the pen.
Ward picked up his seventh save of the season at Creighton last Saturday. He entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out -- he got the first batter to ground back to him for a 1-2-3 double play and then struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Ward finished the week with five strikeouts, and he allowed just four hits.
