BATON ROUGE -- The LSU track and field teams are barely two weeks into the outdoor season and have already solidified their places among the national favorites as the Lady Tigers are No. 1 and the Tigers are No. 2 in the first outdoor power ranking released Wednesday.

This week’s power ranking by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association is based on the seasonal best performances of all returning athletes from the 2007 outdoor season.

The Lady Tigers feature one of the deepest and more talented rosters in all of collegiate track and field as they return five national champion athletes and a total of nine All-Americans from a team that scored 48 points to finish runner-up in the team standings at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., last summer.

Senior standout Kelly Baptiste is also looking to make her return to the national stage this outdoor season after missing much of the postseason a year ago with a back injury.

Baptiste, who did not compete at the NCAA Outdoor meet in 2007 for the first time in her career, is coming off a dominating indoor season in which she won her first career individual NCAA title with a gold-medal winning performance in the 60-meter dash at the national meet.

The Tigers also boast an elite squad as they return four individual All-Americans and two of the nation’s premier 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams that led the team to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2007.

Junior Trindon Holliday is the top returning performer from last year’s outdoor season when he was the national runner-up in the 100-meter dash and the anchor on LSU’s 4x100-meter relay that finished runner-up at the national meet. He is the current school-record holder in the 100 meters after finishing the 2007 season with a top time of 10.02 seconds.

Holliday will team with senior All-American Richard Thompson to give the Tigers a dominating 1-2 punch in the short sprints this spring.

Like Baptiste, Thompson also won his first career individual NCAA title during the indoor season with a win in the 60 meters at the NCAA Indoor meet. Thompson is sure to challenge Holliday for the school record in the 100 meters after setting the record in the 60 meters this year at 6.51.

The squads have gotten off to a fast start in the outdoor season as they combined for 20 qualifiers into the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz., this past weekend. The regional meet is scheduled to take place May 30-31 in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this weekend as they play host to the LSU Tiger Relays at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Friday and Saturday. They will then follow with an annual trip to Austin, Texas, to compete against many of the nation’s best teams in the 81st Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium from April 3-5.
