BATON ROUGE -- LSU junior left-hander Ryan Verdugo was named Monday as the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week by the league office.
Verdugo, a product of Lake Stevens, Wash., earned two wins in his first two career LSU starts last week, posting victories over Southern on Tuesday and Duquesne on Sunday. He worked a total of 10 innings in the two outings, allowing just one run on three hits while recording a 0.90 ERA.
Verdugo registered 13 strikeouts in his two appearances and limited opponents to a .097 batting average. He worked five innings against Duquesne, limiting the Dukes to one run on two hits with four strikeouts. He pitched five shutout frames against Southern, allowing just one hit while collecting nine strikeouts.
Verdugo, a 47th-round draft selection of the San Francisco Giants last summer, transferred to LSU in the fall from Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Wash.
