WILMINGTON, N.C. -- LSU improved its round by 10 shots and moved up six places to 10th after the second round of The Landfall Tradition which is also serving as the NCAA Fall Preview.
The Lady Tigers, ranked 12th in the Golfstat rankings, survived another day in the fall season full of rain and wind.
For the second straight day, juniors Megan McChrystal and Amalie Valle were at the top of their game, both narrowly missing even par rounds with a bogey five on the final hole of the day. They finished at one-over 73 for the second round. McChrystal moved up from 15th to a tie for 12th with a two day total of two-over 146 (73-73) and Valle moved from 25th to 17th at three-over 147 (74-73).
LSU also counted four-over 76s from freshman Mary Michael Maggio and junior Lindy LaBauve in the second round.
“There was a lot of rain and some wind that made things difficult,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “I was very pleased with how we came out in the round after Friday’s first round and we were so close to getting home with a really impressive score. We need to do this again Sunday and finish it up on a good note.”
LSU had a chance to get in under double figures, standing at just four over entering the final three holes of the round, but the weather conditions were getting the best of everyone, including first round leader Southern California that went from even par after Friday’s round to 21-over par and eight place after the second round. Wake Forest, the two-time defending champion of the tournament, shot 16-over par in the first round and then came back with a one-under round of 287 to move all the way to second behind leader UCLA which stands at seven-over par 583 (293-290).
LSU’s 298 put them at 29-over par for the event (307-298) and in 10th place with higher ranked teams Michigan State (4), Pepperdine (7), Georgia (8) and Alabama (9) below the Lady Tigers.
Cheyenne Woods of Wake Forest is the individual leader at five-under par 139 after rounds of 70 and 69.
The final round of the fall season for the Lady Tigers is set for a 7:30 a.m. CDT shotgun start. Live scoring can be found on LSUsports.net through Golfstat.com.
