WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The 12th-ranked LSU women’s golf team got rounds from veteran players Megan McChrystal and Amalie Valle Friday in the first round of the Landfall Tradition a tournament that is also serving as the NCAA Fall Preview event.
McChrystal, after missing the team’s last tournament with the flu, made a great comeback with a one-over par round of 73 in the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event. McChrystal had three bogeys and two birdies during the course of the round. She is in a group of players tied for 15th in the individual competition. McChrystal is ranked 55th in the nation this fall after earning second-team All-American honors as a sophomore.
Valle, also a junior, is tied for 25th at two-over 74 in a four-bogey two birdie round.
As a team, the Lady Tigers struggled, finishing the day in 16th place in the 18-team field at 19-over par 307. Southern California is the leader by five shots at even par 288 with UCLA and Arizona State, the defending national champion tied for second at 293.
LSU had to count two eight-over 80s from freshman Mary Michael Maggio and junior Abby Oberthier. Maggio struggled in her first nine holes, while Oberthier had her struggles coming home in the first round.
The individual leaders are Carlotta Ciganda of Arizona State and Camilla Lennarth of Alabama at four-under 68.
The second round begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday with live hole-by-hole scoring at LSU'sports.net through golfstat.com.
