BATON ROUGE -- The LSU football team tested out its pads for the first time during preseason camp, working out in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) on Monday at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility as practice continued in its split squad format.

The veterans again took the field for the morning practice, going for just over two hours under the hot, Louisiana sun. The freshmen got a reprieve from the heat, taking their two-hour workout indoors.

“It was the first day in shoulder pads and I think we are getting a lot accomplished,” said LSU head coach Les Miles. “In the early practice I thought the offense, defense and special teams showed signs of improving. It’s fun to see.”

Also pleased with the rookie’s afternoon practice, Miles believes the young group is showing promise.

“There is a lot of talent out there,” said Miles. “I think there are a number of guys with some ball skills that can really help us.”

Miles singled out the play of wide receiver Terrance Toliver, safety Chad Jones and the offensive line.

Terrance Toliver is going to be a good player. Chad Jones is in as good of shape as he has been in. He is leaner and very fast with great ball skills and instincts to the ball,” said Miles.

“Our young offensive line is also getting better,” added Miles. “Ernest McCoy, Jarvis Jones, Josh Dworaczyk and T-Bob Hebert are some real quality offensive line guys in this (freshmen) class.”

LSU wraps up its split squad practices Tuesday as it moves to full-squad, as well as full-pad, workouts on Wednesday.
